El profesor Rory O'Connor nació en Derry (Irlanda del Norte) en 1973. Estudió psicología y completó su doctorado en la Queen's University de Belfast en 1997, para luego trasladarse a Escocia, donde ha estado desde entonces. Se incorporó a la Universidad de Glasgow en julio de 2013, donde es profesor de Psicología de la Salud y Director del Laboratorio de Investigación del Comportamiento Suicida en Glasgow, el grupo de investigación líder en suicidios y autolesiones en Escocia. El objetivo general de la investigación realizada dentro del grupo es aplicar modelos teóricos derivados de diferentes áreas de la psicología, ciencias sociales y biomédicas, de manera más amplia para mejorar nuestra comprensión de la etiología.
Es presidente de la Asociación Internacional para la Prevención del Suicidio, ex presidente de la Academia Internacional para la Investigación del Suicidio y miembro de la Asociación Estadounidense de Suicidología. En 2014 fue elegido miembro de la Academia de Ciencias Sociales. También forma parte de la Junta de Revisión Científica de la Fundación Estadounidense para la Prevención del Suicidio, es editor en jefe adjunto de Archives of Suicide Research, y es editor asociado de Suicide and Life-Threatering Behavior and Behavior Therapy. El profesor O'Connor también es miembro de la División de Psicología de la Salud de la Sociedad Británica de Psicología y de la Sociedad Europea de Psicología de la Salud. También es Copresidente del Grupo Asesor Académico del Grupo de Liderazgo para la Prevención del Suicidio del Gobierno de Escocia.
